Founder and Director of Perspective Psychology Services
Hello! I’m Joan Caelli
I am passionate about the provision of holistic and respectful mental health support to clients and their families, and I believe strongly in collaborating with a client’s care team (including occupational therapists, speech pathologists, GPs, paediatricians, psychiatrists and complementary/alternative health care providers) to give the best care possible.
I have practiced in a variety of government, not-for-profit, and private psychology positions. I have a Masters of Child Play Therapy through Deakin University on top of my Psychology degree and full registration as a psychologist. I am an approved NDIS provider, I am a member of the Early Intervention Service Provider Panel providing early intervention services under FaHCSIA funding for children under age 7, I provide services under WorkCover QLD, Victims Assist, I am Medicare registered and able to provide services under Private Health funding (if your provider covers psychology).
In a nutshell
Info Bites
Play Therapy
Play Therapy has a long history and was written about in the 1940s by Virginia Axline in the United States. Play Therapy has been shown to help children and young people with: Autism Spectrum Disorder, behaviour problems, abuse, neglect, early psychosis and attachment problems.
Expressive Therapies
Expressive therapies include art therapy, music therapy, Play Therapy, sandplay therapy and other forms of movement-based therapy. These types of therapies work well because they target multiple areas of the brain and help them to work together. These types of therapies are based on a deep respect for the client and their inherent capacity and as such they help children, adolescents and adults alike to express themselves in the way they need to help them heal in their own way.
Mindfulness
You’ve seen lots of those mindfulness based colouring books for adults in the shops, right? Wondering what it all means? Mindfulness has its roots in the ancient practices of Buddhism, Taoism and Yoga, and basically just means ‘paying careful attention, in the moment, without judgement’. While that might sound simple, it’s deceptively difficult at times, much like meditation. But the benefits of a regular mindfulness practice are huge, with research showing the capacity for mindfulness to reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, and increase emotional intelligence and the ability to cope with distressing thoughts and feelings.
Autism
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects around 1 in every 100 children in Australia. Children and adults with Autism often have difficulty with communication, social skills, behaviour, and sensory processing. At Perspective Psychology Services we use a play-based approach to working with children and young people with Autism. This help them to learn new skills and develop their own unique talents to reveal their true capacity.

Why should I (or my child) see a psychologist?
We all have times in our life when it helps to speak to someone whose focus is on helping you to achieve your goals, whatever they may be. Our lives are filled with demands and sometimes this can feel overwhelming. As psychologists, we are trained to help our clients to find the resources within themselves to lead whole, rich and fulfilling lives. Researchers now have a growing understanding of how counselling and therapy can change our brains for the better, to help children to grow and thrive in an increasingly complex world, and to help adults to navigate the many difficult situations we face on a daily basis.
Perspective Psychology Services can assist children, adolescents and adults with many issues, for example:
-Behavioural difficulties
-Emotional difficulties
-Developmental disabilities (such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and other Pervasive Developmental Disorders)
-Anxiety
-Depression
-Grief and loss
-Stress
-Bullying (both school and workplace)
-Intellectual Disability and Challenging Behaviour
